Lead designer, writer, & visual communicator, The Current, annual magazine for RI NSF EPSCoR

Hello,

I develop narratives showcasing research experiences of faculty and students at eight institutions across Rhode Island, making complex topics in marine sciences accessible to non-experts.

Recent Work

Expertise

  • SciComm Mentorship

I have introduced students to the world of science journalism, creating a newsroom environment by which they learn to research, interview and write compelling narratives about their peers’ research experiences.

  • Graphic Design

Through Adobe Creative Suite and ArcGIS StoryMaps, I have developed print and digital materials to inform communities about research and opportunities for professional advancement.

  • Photography

I have years of experience composing photography for journalistic and academic publications with a focus on human experiences in research and news.

What I am pursuing

As the climate evolves, capturing our human responses is critical to sharing research impacts with the public. Research in the marine sciences encompasses a variety of fields, about which I have experience covering for the past 12 years as a journalist and science communicator. I have showcased projects, for example, in nanosensor development, harmful algal blooms, computer modeling of human behavior in coastal communities, and more.

My interests lie in combining the written word with visual and audio media to tell the most engaging science stories. To that end, I am a member of the National Association of Science Writers, as well as an editorial board member for Momentum, the University of Rhode Island’s biannual research magazine. Marine life abounds from the coastal inlet to the ocean’s deepest trench. Making the discovery of these worlds accessible is my goal as an effective science communicator.
